As we approached the island we could see that the smoke was some distance beyond our lake and Don’s paranoia was unwarranted.  It didn’t appear to be too threatening.  Several days later, the column of smoke was much closer and the billowing smoke looked way too menacing.  We moved the saw and many prized items down to the shores edge, hoping to save hem from the fire should it reach the island.  Of course, there could be a big rain and the lake rise and flood our gear, so it seemed like a no win situation.  Our most precious goods were put in the boat and we returned to the landing and drove to the DNR headquarters at Southend.  The DNR said they were watching the fire, we were in no danger and we could safely return to the island knowing they would come help us out if need be.
